HELPFUL TIPS

I was ALWAYS  dropping the tops off of my toothpaste (What a MAJOR pain) until I started using only the brands with flip-top caps. Colgate carries flip-top caps and there are other brands, too! Aqua-Fresh makes a toothpaste with flip-top caps now, and it comes with free dental floss! Colgate also makes a type for sensitive gums!

My teeth and gums are very sensitive, so I use sensodyne exclusively.  Being a TBI survivor myself,  (Aug.'94 car accident) I know how small objects( like toothpaste caps) are very difficult to manipulate with your fingertips. We must develop individual stratagies to overcome this. What I do, is unscrew the cap, set it down by the sink before it can drop, then continue with the task at hand.

I have trouble holding on to the back of earrings, I ALWAYS drop them on the floor or down the drain. SOLUTION-  Look for the type of earrings that are all one piece- they go through your ear and then hook or snap together.

I have a little trouble remembering things since my stroke and with my anti-seizure meds. I will go from one end of my house with something in mind to do at the other end, get there and will have totally forgotten what, other than I came to do something. Not wanting to waste the trip, I do another task. Almost always in middle of this new chore or task I think of something I need to do or get at the other end. Now, I live in a small house, takes less than 10 seconds, even negotiating the furniture and sleeping dogs, to make the trip. I have a pad of the little post-it notes at each end of the house, if I remember to write it down and don't forget what it was I wanted to write, I have a portable reminder to carry with me, sometimes I even stick it on my belt.

I have large appointment calendars for each area that I need to be reminded of, I have one for things I need to go out to do--doctor/dentist appointments are marked as soon as they're made, activities I have, like I try to do some volunteer work, maybe I've been invited somewhere, etc. I also use it for things I want to do at home, like watch a particular show, pay a  bill, etc.  I have a seperate calendar for reminding me about things to do for my dogs. It even has pictures of dogs as its theme. I mark it when it's the day to give them their heart-worm meds, the date of their next grooming, their annual check-up, etc.  I have a pretty low-key life, so I only need two calenders. the more busy you are, the more calenders you may need. the appointment one is the master one,  I check it first thing in the morning-if I don't forget!

I had trouble locking and un-locking my door because it was hard for me to rotate my keys when they were inside the lock. SOLUTION- A friend sprayed some WD-40 on my house key and also inside of my door lock and now my key slides in and out of the lock and also locks and unlocks easily.

My back pain is helped by just sleeping on my side with a soft down pillow between my knees and down to my ankles. The small alignment along with the other 5 pillows adjusted just right for the neck and arms make a world of difference in how or if I can get out of bed in the morning. Another thing that helps is taking a really hot shower before going to bed and don't dry your back, but lay down on a waterproof moisture heating pad. Prop a foam wedge or a few pillows under the knees and try not to put a pillow under your head. This aligns things nicely also.

Those who have Webvan or Peapod or other grocery delivery services from the web in their area should take advantage of them.  I drink distilled water and just not having to carry that from the store is fabulous. They even put your groceries away if you want them to and it is easy to order, next day delivery and no extra cost. You can buy stamps and other things also.

This is a very simple tip for people with chronic pain. Instead of a heating pad, get someone that can sew make a bag out of cloth and put a pound or so of "long grain rice" in the bag, sew it up, put the bag in the microwave and the rice will stay hot for quite a while and for some reason it is a moist heat, very penetrating. Also, since it is rice it will conform to the place you put it.  It will last forever, doesn't cost much and is better than anything I have used. (But don't get it wet!)
